- child avoids mealtime
- child accepts a rather limited selection foods (e.g. preference for one type of taste, texture, temperature)
- mealtime is stressful for child and/or caregiver
- child is observed to spit out food
- child pockets food
- gagging present
- cough noted following swallow
- child is demonstrating reluctance to try new foods
